Driving Instructor Training

1st Time Driving Instructor Training School

Fancy a career career? Thought about passing your driving skills on to others?  At 1st Time, we offer a complete driving instructor training package & we guarantee you a position with us when you pass. We run a training class every Thursday night at our office in Plumstead High Street. This is open to all Potential & Approved Driving Instructors as well as anyone looking for information about our industry. Just pop along at 5pm.

We are one of the cheapest training schools around & we offer full support with DVSA registered instructors every step of the way.

So how easy is it to become an instructor? The answer is it’s not for everyone. The tests are difficult, you have to be extremely good with people & have nerves of steel.

So what’s involved?

To be eligible to apply you need to have held a full UK or EU / European Economic Area unrestricted licence for four of the past six years and you must not have been disqualified in the past four years.

The first step is to complete a DBS (formally CRB) check & apply to the DVSA to become an instructor.

In order to become a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) you will have to pass three different exams.

Part 1: THEORY TEST

The first test is a multiple choice theory test based around the Highway Code. The test comprises of 100 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 85%.

The second part of the test is a Hazard Perception Test. The minimum score you must get to pass is 57 out of 75.

You must pass both parts of this test at the same time to progress.

Part 2: TEST OF YOUR ABILITY TO DRIVE

The second test is an advanced driving test.Candidates can expect to drive for approximately 1 hour demonstrating a high standard of driving expertise with the minimum of faults.

Part 3: TEST OF YOUR ABILITY TO TEACH

The third and final one is a test of your ability to teach. This comprises two scenarios where the examiner role plays the part of a learner.

How Long Before I Am Qualified?

The DVSA give you two years, from the date you pass Part 1, to pass the other tests. Once you have successfully completed part 3 you will be a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor.

Your course structure takes into account both your ability and your availability, so how quickly you start depends on a number of different things, both your driving ability and test waiting times play a part. It can take as little as 6-9 months to become a fully qualified instructor. However once you have passed part 2 and completed 40 hours of training, you can start working (and earning) as a trainee driving instructor (PDI).

So What Training Do You Provide?

At 1st Time we offer classroom training in conjunction with in-car training sessions. Additionally on a Thursday evening, an ‘open’ classroom session is held for students to discuss the three stages of qualification. Training for part 2 will be in-car training. Part 3 training is a mixture of in-car and classroom training. The in-car training is usually on a one-to-one basis with occasional sharing with other students to give the trainees the experience of undertaking and observing role play scenarios. Once 40 hours of training has been completed you will be able to work under a trainee licence (PDI) whilst you await your part 3 test date.

How Much Can I Expect To Earn?

What you will earn as an ADI depends on two distinct factors:-

  1. The price of lessons

  2. The number of hours you want to work

Realistically if you were teaching for 40 1 hour lessons a week you would be earning in the region of £800 gross, less franchise (currently at £174) & expenses.

BUT REMEMBER, THE CAR IS YOURS WHEN YOU ARE NOT WORKING!

How Much Will My Training Cost Me?

Option 1 – Discounted Option

£650(+vat) Immediate payment, minimum 2 year contract with 1st Time once qualified.

Option 2 – £2250 +vat Total or Pay In Installments

£250 (+vat) + £700 (+vat) + £700(+vat) + £600(+vat) = £2250(+vat)

You will be asked to sign an agreement for training and pay a deposit of £250 + vat.  At this point you will receive the books and DVDs required to pass the part one theory test.  You will also be given instructions on how to apply for a DBS (formally CRB) & to how to apply to the DVSA to become a trainee instructor.

We offer up to 2 hours help with an instructor trainer for help with the part 1 theory test if needed.

Once you have passed the part one, a further stage payment of £700 + vat is required to continue with the part 2, which is the extended driving test. You will receive 8 hours of one to one in car training, which should be enough to pass. Additional training can be offered if required at £30 an hour.

After passing part 2, another stage payment of £700 + vat is required for the next 20 hours of training for the part three test.  Then a further £600 + vat for the final 20 hours.

Once these 40 hours have been completed you are able to apply to the DVSA for a “Provisional Driving Instructor” Licence. At this point you will be given a franchised round & you can start earning money. A dual-controlled vehicle & students to teach will be provided in return for £174 a week (less insurance). This enables you to gain real life experience with genuine learners.  The PDI licence lasts for six months during which you can request further training at a cost of £30 per hour. You get 3 attempts at the part 3 test. Once qualified, you continue with your franchise with 1st Time.

Option 3 – Pay As You Go

£30 an hour with an instructor trainer only. This option does not offer any other support.

Terms are available to meet your individual needs, should you wish to spread the cost over the period of your training. If you need help in funding this course, the government may be able to help you with a Professional & Career Development loan.
